As a introduction to the extra shows for Hollyoaks, a new 'after hours' programme was released on a separate channel of E4 featuring the characters in their lively clubbing selves. This trailer shows the first introductory trailer for the new show. Starting with no introduction to which programme the trailer is addressing a extreme close up of a couple starts the trailer followed by another couple both kissing and giving a first impression that this programme is going to be of the interest of a younger audience with the what could be thought to be explicit nature of the trailer. The usual voice for E4 introduces the soap with an introduction to the trailer introducing Hollyoak's new feature, the language used by the voiceover with words such as 'hotties' the audience knows that the programme is going to me of a lower class nature. The mise-en-scene of the trailer including characters dressed in skimpy clubbing outfits which is expected of young people but not necessarily always expected of the usual soap. The setting of all scenes shown are all quite club like and sophisticated with limos and swimming pools suggesting characters with a lot of money. The sound in the background of the trailer is a usual club song that you'd expect to be played at a party which just adds to the essence of it being for a younger audience. The same style of music plays throughout with diegetic sound playing through conversations until it hits the plot of the series in the trailer where it stops. There are graphics incorporated along with the voiceover on a rough background with neon blue lights highlighting the speech. The text is used to exaggerate the important elements of the voiceover's speech and encourage viewers to come and watch the series. As the plot unfolds at the end of the trailer. It is clear that is serious as the non-diegetic party music stops and only close ups of the characters faces as a reaction shot to what is being said is shown so that the speech is heard and finalises the viewing.

This promotional video by EastEnders is an introduction to a new storyline to the soap featuring old characters making a comeback to the programme. From looking at the EastEnders' trailers they only show trailers to mark momentus occasions or extreme storylines. This video starts with no indication of who is arriving at the location with just shots of the square in turmoil, the pub being closed and boarded up, the signs falling off and the characters hiding away in their homes from this returning character. However, from the wild west theme, the trailer is seen as quite comical as it portrays Walford to be like a typical desserted 'wild west' town showing the ther characters to be shocked and intimidated by her arrival. As the music builds up the voice of the opposition of her character Alfie Moon is shown also in the themed outfit wearing a cowboy hat to the rescue of Kat as always. As the couple are iconic and well known in the soap for their relationship, their return is expected to be shown in this way as a momentus occasion to encourage viewers that may have stopped watching since their previous leave to return to watching the show. The final voiceover finalising the information shown in the trailer finalises the trailer with the words of 'It's all kicking off in the square'. The familiar cliffhanger theme tune then works with the camera as shows a shot reverse shot sequence on each beat showing the face of each character and their expression. The only graphic throughout the trailer is the final EastEnders logo on the final high angle shot of the confrontation of Kat and Alfie establishing the soap being advertised in the trailer. |
This Coronation Street trailer plays on the concept of having important storylines based on significant days of the year, in this case the date of Friday the 13th is portrayed throughout the trailer as being lucky. Throughout the trailer different elements of the video include hints of 'luck' including as soon as the trailer starts with a good luck card, a good luck feature on the cake and the Good Luck sign written on the car at the end. With the storyline of a wedding, automatic assumptions are going to think that the occasion will be a disaster which is hinted at by the sarcastic signals about luck. The different shots of different characters within the programme and their expressions mainly being of worried faces also adds to the expected disastrous outcome to the wedding. The mise-en-scene of the trailer concerning the wedding is all white and pink indicating a girly wedding organised by the bride suggesting that the groom is not entirely happy with the situation because of his controlling fiancee. The only graphics used throughout the trailer is the finalised logo of the soap and a 'itv1' logo positioned in the left right hand corner throughout so that the channel the programme is to be shown on is significant and known throughout the trailer. |
Although, 90210 is a drama, lots of soaps do not include magazine adverts as they are mainly advertised on television, therefore I have chosen to analyse some TV drama posters as guidance of a similar programme. The masthead of this image is the largest element of this poster and is very prominent as the title is all numbers, the font is quite modern and stylish in white contrasting the sky background. Underneath the title is a small 'tagline' styled text where the capitalised day of the week and the time it is included which is an important factor of the soap as the viewers need to know when the programme is being shown. This also applies to the logo on the bottom left of the poster where the channel logo is presented along with the website so the viewer knows where to watch the programme and where to find out more about the programme. The main element of the poster is the main image which shows the cast of all fresh looking young teenage friends in the sea giving a insight of the location being near the sea in a sunny location. The characters are dressed very relaxed, modern and summery with happy expressions which shows the relationships between the characters. There is also a mix of men and women which gives the programme a sense of being available to be watched by both genders. The sunny weather adds to the effect of bright and happy characters giving the idea to the viewer of an upbeat programme that will appeal to teenagers that are looking for an enjoyable light hearted drama. The colours of the image with the contrast of dark and light from the dark sky and the bright light around the cast shows they are the most important element of the poster. The colour of the clothing could suggest the different personalities of the cast, the girls in dresses being very girly & the guy in the light smart suit and braces could be more high class than the others. The positioning of cast also suggests future stories in the programme for example, the young girl hugging the guy suggests a relationship or close friendship between the two characters. | ![]() |
![]() | The programme Skins is automatically thought to be an awkward programme from the name. The name 'Skins' is obviously related to the body and the emotion reality of a person which is portrayed in this poster. The masthead of the tape across the top of the poster is a symbolic tool used by E4 to make a statement that is always shown on E4's posters/features and is recognisable. As the programme is quite edgy the tape looks quite sloppy and ripped which reflects the programme. The tagline on the second tape is important as it states when the programme is back for the previous fans of the show to tune into and the new fans to know when to begin watching the new series. The E4 logo is also quite jagged and ripped as it is a statement that this is one of the edgiest shows shown by the programme. The main image of the poster is just one image which is quite disturbing where the character is shown emerged under dirty green water in a bath. The character is very pale and serious as if he is committing suicide by drowning himself under the water. The location of the image is a typical bathroom but it is obviously left uncared for, the tiles are all cracked and the sink and bath are dirty and are obviously not what a normal person would want to live in. The state of the location gives a hint of the style of life the character is living in and why he would want to be committing suicide. Normal everyday objects in a bathroom are included in the poster which gives a sense of realism and that this could really happen to someone. The lighting of the image is quite dark and seems to be only lit by the natural light form the window in the top left corner which is making the character look even more pale and unhealthy. The colour of the bathroom is green which is associated with murky and grime which reflects the again style of the life the character could be living in. |
The drama 'Top Boy' is instantly shown a an urban programme from the location of the poster. The name of the drama is positioned in the bottom left of the image with the title in quite casual normal white font on a black filled background. Underneath is the date and time that the programme is going to be shown on so that people interested in watching can be sure to tune in. The channel is emphasised by the recognisable logo on the right side of the poster alongside the characters as it is a important element of the programme for the viewers. Also in the bottom right hand corner is a small text of the sponsor of the programme who would probably have to pay more to have their name on the poster to be associated with the programme. The main image of the poster shows three black males standing on walls and on cars which gives a suggestion that the characters are rebellious and of high status that they can stand on these objects without a care and not be restrained. Their casual clothing suggests supports their uncaring urban positioning as they look to be the typical stereotypical urban area men. The location is shown as surrounded by blocks of flats in a run down area where the area is not looked after and vandalised by the people living there by graffiti and ruins of cars. The lighting is shown quite brightly through the two blocks of flats highlighting the division of the two buildings but also shining the light directly into the camera, slightly disguising two of the characters from the bright light. Also the light from the crashed car shines showing a mist around the car from the fumes being given off by the car. The crashed car also highlights the vandalism and crime within the area that is obviously not being controlled. | ![]() |
